Think of the gadgets you can’t live without: The smartphone you constantly check. The camera that goes with you on every vacation. The TV that serves as a portal to binge-watching and -gaming. Each owes its influence to one model that changed the course of technology for good.

It’s those devices we’re recognizing in this list of the 50 most influential gadgets of all time.

Some of these, like Sony’s Walkman, were the first of their kind. Others, such as the iPod, propelled an existing idea into the mainstream. Some were unsuccessful commercially, but influential nonetheless. And a few represent exciting but unproven new concepts (looking at you Oculus Rift).

Rather than rank technologies—writing, electricity, and so on—we chose to rank gadgets, the devices by with consumers let the future creep into their present. The list—which is ordered by influence—was assembled and deliberated on at (extreme) length by TIME’s technology and business editors, writers and reporters. What did we miss?

Apple iPhone

Apple was the first company to put a truly powerful computer in the pockets of millions when it launched the iPhone in 2007. Smartphones had technically existed for years, but none came together as accessibly and beautifully as the iPhone. Apple’s device ushered in a new era of flat, touchscreen phones with buttons that appeared on screen as you needed them, replacing the chunkier phones with slide-out keyboards and static buttons. What really made the iPhone so remarkable, however, was its software and mobile app store, introduced later. The iPhone popularized the mobile app, forever changing how we communicate, play games, shop, work, and complete many everyday tasks.

The iPhone is a family of very successful products. But, more than that, it fundamentally changed our relationship to computing and information—a change likely to have repercussions for decades to come.

Renowned journalist Edward R. Murrow famously described television as “nothing but wires and lights in a box.” Of all such boxes, Sony’s Trinitron—launched in 1968 as color TV sales were finally taking off—stands at the fore of memorable sets, in part for its novel way of merging what to that point had been three separate electron guns. The Trinitron was the first TV receiver to win a vaunted Emmy award, and over the next quarter century, went on to sell over 100 million units worldwide.

  • HUNGRY FOR DISCOUNTS

As more holiday shoppers are shifting online to bag their holiday bargains, findings from FREE-UPGRADE, a technology company specialized in mobile journey marketing, discovers some interesting insights, including the rise of Black Friday apps and the increased engagement on discount/coupon apps.

With the Black Friday-to-Cyber-Monday weekend falling in November, usage and engagement on retail behemoth apps such as Walmart, Amazon and Best Buy was significant, but November’s ‘trending apps tell a different story. The trending apps list represents the apps with the greatest change in rank across the month of November.

When looking at active users, Black Friday specific app users were most active among this trending apps list, at 78.5% and 67.7% respectfully, and the BF (Black Friday) Ads app also had the highest amount of sessions per user at 8.1 sessions. This represents user demand for Black Friday deals and consumer interest in securing the greatest savings.

Another interesting (but not so surprising) finding is the usage of discount shopping apps. Black Friday gained popularity as more and more consumers crave a discount. This traditional holiday sales kick-off weekend boosts retailer profits while also alleviating the financial strain on the shopper. Looking at the trending apps list, no wonder users are most engaged on discount apps such as Bidderlo Auctions and deal - Sell, Buy, Trade. These marketplace apps that connect local buyers and sellers gained popularity over the festive season, with both apps in the top 5 for time per session. In fact, averaged over 12 minutes per session, as users spend more time bidding for the right price.

Unofficial discount shopping apps also made the trending list, with Shopper Browser for Wish and Coupons for Kroger both demonstrating increased possession growth over the month of November. The increased growth and engagement of unofficial retailer apps indicates that users still planned to conduct holiday shopping with their favorite retailers, but they wanted to do so at the best price possible.

November’s top 10 trending apps list reveal that users are hungry for discounts and will spend time browsing for the best bargains. With more than a third of all Black Friday sales coming from smartphones, understanding which apps are trending and what users are doing across their holiday shopping journey is paramount. As the holiday shopping season is in full swing and the retail showdown heats up, mobile users will continue sifting through various apps for a holiday steal and can be reached by brands when the price is right.

  • WHY COOK - Three Great Food Games?

Cook Indian food, Japanese fare, and pizza on your phone !

I love video games, and I love food, and I love video games about food. Which is why it breaks my heart that finding good video games featuring food, like Final Fantasy XV and its beautiful road trip cuisine or Gordon Ramsay Dash’s mix of addictive gameplay and celebrity, can be as tedious and frustrating as shucking and peeling fava beans, LOLS. The app store seems like it’s got a cornucopia of cooking-based mobile games, but on closer examination, it’s mostly just a slimy stew of nearly identical restaurant management apps, all of them basically the same uninteresting gameplay with different coats of paint.

My friend actaully learned how to cook in a few weeks and the food he prepared for us 2 weeks ago was restaurant quality and very tasty, because i had second helpings.
